Web Home Page: Lengwe National Park covers 887 km of flat to undulating terrain with some lowland flood plains along the Shire River. It contains a mixture of deciduous woodland and thicket, including mopane, miombo and other species associated with savannah environments. The park was originally proclaimed to protect a population of nyala, but other species that may now be seen include buffalo, plains zebra, bushbuck, kudu, impala, sable antelope, suni, and samango and vervet monkeys. Predators are represented by lion, leopard and spotted hyena. The birdlife is prolific, and the gorgeous bush shrike, the barred long-tailed cuckoo and the black-and-white flycatcher may be spotted. Game-viewing is poor between December and June, but the birdlife is at its best in December and January. The area can be uncomfortably ht in October and November. Location: Southern Malawi; south-west of Blantyre. Access: From Blantyre take the road (m1) towards Nsanje via Chikwawa; after 74 km turn right at the signpost to the park, the entrance is 9 km from the turnoff. All internal roads are gravel and likely to be impassable in the rainy season; although access to the camp is possible all year, 4x4 vehicles are recommended. Accommodation: 4 4-bed chalets, each with separate kitchen, student hostels. Other facilities: An 83 km network of gravel game-viewing roads; a self-guided 2,5 km walking trail; walks accompanied by a game scout; game-viewing and birdwatching hides; picnic sites. The nearest fuel and food supplies must be obtained 18 km away at Nchalo. Open: Throughout the year, but movement is limited during the rainy season. Beware: Bilharzia.
